The whole thing went down in July 2023. Five people jumped out and ran after the car spun out on Route 287 North.

Details of the High-Speed Chase Incident

On July 9, 2023, a regular patrol by Montville police suddenly turned chaotic. Officers spotted a stolen BMW cruising down Route 202.

When they tried to pull the car over, the driver—Nasir Moses—decided to take off instead. That choice set everything in motion.

The Pursuit and Immediate Aftermath

The chase got out of hand fast. Moses was reportedly flying at speeds over 90 mph before he lost control on Route 287 North.

The BMW spun out, and all five people inside bailed and tried to make a run for it. Four got caught pretty quickly.

Moses, though, managed to slip away for a while. Cops didn’t give up—they ran a thorough investigation and pinned him as the driver.

He wasn’t arrested for this right away. Instead, police picked him up on an unrelated charge in Bergen County in September 2024 and then transferred him to answer for the chase.

Legal Consequences for All Involved

In March, Moses pleaded guilty to eluding police and receiving stolen property. That’s what landed him the five-year prison term.

His five years for eluding run at the same time as a three-year sentence for the stolen property charge. So, he’s serving both together, not one after the other.

Sentencing Details and Timeline

Moses could be eligible for parole as soon as July 24, 2025. If he serves the full sentence, though, he won’t get out until January 11, 2028.

The other folks in the car didn’t get off scot-free. Diyana Graham, 21, and Nashawn Holmes, 18, both from Newark, were sentenced to probation, jail credit, and some community service.

There were also two juveniles involved. Authorities charged them too, but because of their age, their identities aren’t public knowledge.

Impact on the Jersey City Community

This case really shines a light on ongoing worries about auto theft and reckless driving. These problems hit communities all over New Jersey, and Jersey City definitely feels it too.

Local law enforcement pushes forward with extra patrols and community programs. They’re always looking for ways to keep people informed and safe.

If you’re checking out things to do in Jersey City, you’ll notice the city keeps a strong police presence, especially in busy tourist spots and near Jersey City hotels. Safety is a big deal in all city districts.

Authorities want both locals and visitors to experience the city without worry. They put a lot of effort into making sure that’s possible.
