The 2016 Ordeal and Survival
Back in 2016, Taylor met Wheeler-Weaver and narrowly escaped being murdered after waking up to him sexually assaulting and strangling her while she was handcuffed. Displaying incredible presence of mind, she managed to talk her way back to a motel and safely fled the scene.
Regrettably, initial reports indicated that responding police officers disbelieved her account and even threatened her with arrest instead of offering protection. Authorities also tragically failed to act on earlier warnings provided by others regarding Wheeler-Weaver, who systematically targeted vulnerable women online.

The Path to Justice and Conviction
Because law enforcement initially stalled, the predator went on to brutally murder victims Robin West, Joanne Brown, and Sarah Butler before a civilian digital sting operation finally led to his apprehension. It took immense civic courage for community members to step up where institutional safety nets had unfortunately faltered.
Taylor’s courageous testimony in court ultimately helped secure Wheeler-Weaver’s December 2019 conviction on multiple felony counts, including murder and attempted murder. In October 2021, the killer was finally sentenced to 160 years in prison with a minimum of 145 years before parole eligibility.
Honoring Her Memory Today
As our city continues to process this sorrowful loss, many locals and visitors looking for things to do are taking moments of silence to remember the victims and survivors of violence. Healing from such deep psychological scars is a lifelong battle that demands our collective compassion and support.
In the wake of her passing, Lola Acevedo has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her daughter’s funeral and burial expenses. We encourage anyone who is able to support the family during this heartbreaking time to contribute and honor Taylor’s enduring legacy of survival.
