PATH Weekend Closures: No Harrison-Journal Square Service Starting Sept 13

The PATH system connects commuters and travelers across Northern New Jersey and New York City. This fall, several weekend closures are coming—and honestly, they’re a bit of a headache.

Starting Saturday, September 13th, PATH will suspend weekend service between Harrison and Journal Square on certain dates. Crews need to demolish a Conrail freight rail bridge that crosses the tracks, so, yeah, it’s for a good cause.

These closures are part of a big infrastructure upgrade plan. The goal? Make the PATH system safer and more efficient for everyone.

Service will pause on the Newark–World Trade Center line between Harrison and Journal Square, both ways. Closures run weekends from 11:59 PM Friday until 5:00 AM Monday.

Alternative Transportation Options

Even with the closure between Harrison and Journal Square, PATH will still run between Newark Penn Station and Harrison. Service also continues on the Journal Square–World Trade Center and Journal Square–33rd Street via Hoboken routes.

Shuttle Bus Services

Free shuttle buses will run between Harrison and Journal Square, and also between Newark Penn Station and Journal Square. Be ready to add a bit of extra time to your trip, especially if you’re traveling during busy weekend hours—traffic can be unpredictable.

The PATH Forward Program

All these changes fall under the Port Authority’s $430 million PATH Forward program. The focus is on fixing up key PATH stations like Hoboken, Grove Street, Newport, and Exchange Place.

They’re also working on infrastructure upgrades meant to cut down on future service interruptions.

Why the Upgrades Are Urgent

Since spring 2025, the PATH system has seen repeated service interruptions, including full shutdowns and even fires. These problems really highlight why modernizing the system can’t wait any longer.

Impact on Travelers and Visitors

If you’re heading into Jersey City on these weekends, plan ahead. Whether it’s for work, seeing friends, or just exploring, adjusting your route and catching a shuttle early can save you some hassle.

Exploring Jersey City During the Closures

Transit disruptions aren’t exactly fun, but maybe it’s a chance to slow down and see the neighborhood. Try a waterfront walk, or grab something tasty from one of the local restaurants—there’s always something interesting to do in Jersey City.

Planning Your Stay and Movement Around the City

If you’re visiting from out of town, think about booking a nearby Jersey City hotel to make getting around a little easier. Picking the right spot means you can enjoy the city and stay close to transit that’s still running.

Getting Around During the Disruptions

You can find info on getting to Jersey City during these closures on the PATH website and Port Authority alerts. Depending on where you’re coming from, NJ Transit rail, ferries, or rideshares might be your best bet while PATH crews get the work done.

The Bigger Picture for Jersey City Residents

The city splits into several vibrant city districts. Each one has its own community life and amenities.

Construction work will temporarily inconvenience commuters. Still, the city wants to boost transit connectivity between these districts and to New York City.

For residents, better service should mean fewer delays. Rides could get smoother in the coming years—at least, that’s the hope.
