Boulevard Drinks moves across Journal Square after 89 years.

After an incredible 89 years serving hungry locals, the legendary Boulevard Drinks is preparing to leave its historic home at 48 Journal Square Plaza. This forced relocation stems from a massive new 50-story mixed-use development project anchored by a Whole Foods store.

Even though owner Victor Victoratos held a valid lease extending through 2034, his landlord notified the business to vacate by May 2026. If you want to dive deeper into how our municipality evolved over the decades to reach this point, check out this look at Jersey City history.

The End of an Era at Journal Square Plaza

For nearly nine decades, generations of residents have stopped by the iconic storefront for their famous hot dogs. This impending departure highlights the rapid urban changes reshaping our downtown core.

As you plan your stay or visit the area, you will notice sweeping transformations all around Journal Square. Massive residential towers and the towering Journal Squared development are redefining the local skyline.

Navigating the Big Move

Local officials, including Mayor James Solomon, stepped in to ensure this vital neighborhood institution found a viable local solution. Following intense negotiations and legal hurdles, the business announced it will officially close its original doors on November 30, 2026.

Fortunately, fans will not have to say goodbye forever to their favorite neighborhood eatery. Boulevard Drinks has officially signed a brand-new lease directly across the street at the PATH Plaza.

What Comes Next for the Iconic Brand

Owner Victor Victoratos anticipates reopening the historic eatery in its fresh location by February or March 2027. This ensures that a cherished piece of local culinary culture remains right where it belongs.

While navigating the neighborhood during construction can be tricky, figuring out getting around remains straightforward thanks to nearby transit hubs. Visitors will find the new storefront just steps away from their usual daily commute.

A Revitalized Journal Square Landscape

This high-profile relocation is just one of many exciting shifts currently happening throughout the entire district. Historic landmarks nearby are also receiving much-needed attention and modern upgrades.

For instance, the historic Loew’s Theater is currently undergoing major renovations as it prepares for a grand reopening. Visitors looking to explore these ongoing local developments can easily find great options for where to stay nearby.

Looking Forward to 2027

There is no shortage of things to do as Journal Square blends its rich past with a vibrant, modern future. The arrival of Whole Foods alongside the relocation of Boulevard Drinks proves that progress and tradition can coexist.

Make sure to stop by the original location before November 30 to get one last classic hot dog. We look forward to welcoming the iconic shop back to its new home early next year!
