A Thrilling Championship and a Jersey City Contender

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been around since 1925, and it still brings together some of the sharpest young minds from all over the country. This year’s event took place in Washington D.C., with 247 finalists, all 15 or younger, battling over three pretty exhausting days.

The stakes? Huge. We’re talking about a $50,000 prize and, of course, the national title. On the final day, contestants went through 18 rounds without a single mistake, which led to a tense spell-off for the win.

The spell-off, introduced in 2021 after that unforgettable eight-way tie in 2019, has really changed the game. It’s fast, nerve-wracking, and demands not just a big vocabulary but also nerves of steel.

Our Local Hero: Ishaan Gupta’s Remarkable Journey

Shrey Parikh, age 14, from Rancho Cucamonga, California, took home the trophy in the end. But honestly, Jersey City’s Ishaan Gupta deserves a spotlight, too.

Ishaan is just 12, a seventh-grader at Frank R. Conwell Middle School. He showed up ready, representing Jersey City with a mix of skill and poise you don’t see every day.

He powered through all 18 rounds on the final day without tripping up once. Some of the words he spelled would make most adults blink twice. It was clear he put in the work and had the kind of focus that makes you sit up and pay attention.

When the spell-off came, the pressure really turned up. Ishaan spelled 25 words correctly in that rapid-fire round—no small feat. He missed out on the championship by a hair, but his performance left everyone impressed and, honestly, pretty proud to call him a local.

He had to wait in seclusion during his opponent’s turn, which can’t be easy. But he handled it with grace and grit, showing real sportsmanship.

The competition saw some wild words. Parikh clinched it with “bromocriptine”—not exactly a word you hear every day. Ishaan spelled “Ertebolle” correctly, which, if you didn’t know, refers to an ancient Baltic culture. His range was just impressive.
