Jersey City Mom, Son Foil Carjacker at School Pickup

In this week’s Jersey City update, a mother and her son fought off a carjacker during an after-school pickup near Tuers Avenue. The incident sparked a fast, regional police response that spilled into nearby towns.

A teacher jumped in to help and got struck by the suspect. The suspect then ran back to a waiting silver BMW X6, which police said had been stolen from Newark earlier that day.

All victims declined medical attention at the scene. The BMW was spotted again the next morning by Glen Ridge police, who chased it east on Bloomfield Avenue.

During the chase, the car swerved into the opposite lane and hit a westbound vehicle, forcing it to stop. The suspects ran from the car, and officers chased down and arrested a 21-year-old Montclair man.

One officer and someone from the struck car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment. Police said charges against the arrested man were still pending.

Investigators are still piecing together the timeline. The whole thing shows just how quickly a regular day can spiral and how police from different towns have to work together when crimes cross borders.

Officials said nobody needed to go to the hospital, but the episode definitely raised more concerns about carjackings and the use of stolen vehicles in the area.

Law enforcement from Jersey City and surrounding towns coordinated closely to track the stolen BMW X6 and catch the suspects. The danger to bystanders seemed limited this time, but it’s pretty clear carjackings don’t respect zip codes—they can jump from one county to another in no time.

Authorities are looking at surveillance footage, vehicle histories, and talking to witnesses to fill in the gaps. The investigation is still open. Police are asking people to report anything suspicious and to help out with ongoing inquiries.

Events like this push locals and travelers to take a few extra precautions. It’s smart to stay alert, especially during after-school hours or in busy spots. Sharing your plans with family and keeping valuables out of sight can help.

A lot of people in the community say better lighting, more cameras, and active neighborhood policing make a real difference.
