Jersey City Native, Pro Basketball Player Stranded in Middle East

This blog post recounts the ordeal of Eugene Campbell, a Jersey City-born professional basketball player who found himself stranded in the Middle East after an abrupt split with his Jordan club. The GoFundMe push that brought him home drew support from people all over New Jersey.

A Hard Road Abroad: Campbell’s Ordeal

Campbell traveled to Jordan to play for Inglizia Sports Club. He got cut after a single game when the team decided to bring in another player.

The club promised to pay him and book his return flight, but never did. Living conditions in the team apartment fell apart—first no water, then no heat—and staff kept dodging his requests before finally ordering him to leave, offering no help at all.

Before this, he played for a different team in Lebanon. A fraudulent charge there froze his personal funds, and regional tensions after attacks in Iran made things worse.

With no money and no way home, he started a GoFundMe campaign, aiming to raise $3,000 for a plane ticket back to the United States.

Within 48 hours, supporters from New Jersey and beyond jumped in and contributed more than he expected. Campbell’s social posts helped the campaign go viral, and donations poured in as word spread.

The GoFundMe Surge, Donor Support, and Club Response

By the second day, donations shot past $16,000. Friends, family, and New Jersey communities stepped up to cover travel costs and ease his worries about getting home.

Inglizia Sports Club eventually provided a plane ticket on Thursday. Campbell said he plans to offer refunds to any GoFundMe donors who want them, hoping to pay the generosity forward to someone else in need.

News 12 reached out to Inglizia Sports Club for comment and is still waiting for a response. Campbell says he wants to give back to the communities that rallied around him, and it’s kind of incredible how quickly support can come together when someone’s far from home.
