Liberty State Park
In June 2007, Liberty State Park celebrated its 31st anniversary as a gateway to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the home of Liberty Science Center and the restored Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. Liberty State Park's wide open spaces, paved walkways and public gathering places provide visitors with spectacular and inspiring views of Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, the New York City skyline and New York Harbor. In recognition of its importance as a public space during and in the months following the terrible events of 2001, New Jersey's September 11 memorial will be located in Liberty State Park.
If you're planning a visit to some of our nation's most inspirational historic sites, why fight New York traffic and crowds? Ferry service from Liberty State Park's terminal is the fastest and most convenient way to visit Lady Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. View ferry schedules and purchase tickets at www.statuereservations.com.
Once a waterfront wasteland, Liberty State Park is now a beloved open space park on the Jersey City waterfront. Stretching across more than 600 acres of salt marsh wetlands, grassy recreational areas and wildlflower meadows (plus an additional 600 acres of submerged lands), Liberty State Park also offers miles of paths and walkways, including the waterfront Liberty Walk along the park's eastern edge. Visitors enjoy picnicking, hiking, biking, birdwatching, nature photography, boating and canoeing, rollerblading, exercising along the Parcourse outdoor fitness trail, and a variety of educational programs based at Liberty State Park's Interpretive Center (designed by world-famous architect Michael Graves). A public boat launch and marina are also easily accessible in Liberty State Park.
Nature continues to make a dramatic recovery in Liberty State Park's interior, where plans for one of the nation's largest urban ecological restoration projects are underway. The restored areas will include new nature trails and educational opportunities. The NJ Division of Parks and Forestry's Web site is an excellent source of information about Liberty State Park and its many amenities.
