The Heights
As its name suggests, Jersey City's Heights District is perched high atop the Palisades on the western banks of the Hudson River. Its elevation above the Hudson provides residents and visitors with panoramic views of neighboring Hoboken and the New York City skyline to the east. Elegant Victorian houses are scattered along the main Heights thoroughfares, including Summit Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard. The Heights is even home to Jersey City's oldest house (c. 1740) on Palisades Avenue.
Leonard Gordon Park (aka "Mosquito Park"), with its whimsical oversize sculptures of bear and buffalo, is located in the western portion of the Heights, not far from the site of Reservoir #3, the focus of a local preservation effort.
Of course, shopping is always important in the Central Avenue Special Improvement District, with its bustling stores and lively community life. The adjoining residential areas allow for easy walking distances to many Jersey City shops and restaurants.
