Ferry
All of Jersey City's transit systems are convenient and efficient—but for a scenic journey to New York City, the ferry can't be beat.
NY Waterway maintains cross-Hudson service between Jersey City and Manhattan, a total of four routes set against the backdrop of the NYC skyline. There's nothing quite like arriving in lower or midtown Manhattan after a relaxing cruise across the river. Jersey City's ferry terminals are located at Newport (tennis court pier east of River Drive South in the Newport Development), Harborside (Second Street), Colgate Center (Hudson Street), Liberty Harbor Marina (Marin Blvd.) and Port Liberte (Chapel Avenue).
Find commuter schedules, connecting rail and bus lines and a map of ferry routes at the NY Waterway Web site. Please note that ferry riders can take the free Manhattan Bus Service (or an NYC taxi) from the West 38th Street ferry terminal to various Manhattan destinations.
For more information about commuter ferry service, connecting bus routes and sightseeing cruises, contact NY Waterway Ferry Service at 800-533-3779.
In January 2008, Statue Cruises began providing ferry service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Ticket offices, parking and departures are located in Liberty State Park at the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. You can view Jersey City ferry schedules and reserve tickets online.
For a different way to see both sides of the Hudson River, try a water taxi! These double-decker boats depart from Paulus Hook in Jersey City and stop at ports in midtown and lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Buy a two-day pass and enjoy a weekend of sightseeing in and around NYC, or take a tour of the New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Call New York Water Taxi at 212-742-1969.
