India Square
You can take a trip to southeast Asia without ever leaving Jersey City. The heart of Jersey City's vital Indian-American community, India Square is a section of Newark Avenue in the Journal Square District where Indian food, groceries, clothing, movies, jewelry and other delights abound. It is also where Indian festivals such as Navratri, the Hindu festival of worship, dance and music, are celebrated with friends, family and neighbors.
India Square is easily accessible from Jersey City's Journal Square PATH subway stop just a few blocks away (walk down Kennedy Boulevard to its intersection with Newark Avenue). Indians and non-Indians alike flock here for the diverse, delicious Indian fare, with many vegetarian options and an emphasis on delicate shadings of textures and flavors.
India Square's many small stores and stands offer fresh vegetables and fruits used to prepare authentic Indian home-cooked meals, while specialty clothing shops display beautifully-detailed saris, salwars and sherwanis. India Square is also the place to go in Jersey City for a wide selection of Indian DVDs and videos, music CDs and books and magazines.
