Walkways & Hiking Trails Jersey City was recently named one of the country's Top 10 "Best Walking Cities" by the American Podiatric Medical Association. One reason might be the wonderful walkways and hiking trails that wind through the city, stretch out alongside the waterfront and meander through the city's parks and open space areas.
The Hackensack RiverWalk is a planned 8-mile waterfront park connecting Lincoln Park to the Hudson County Park and points north. The RiverWalk was originally constructed as a small pedestrian path in conjunction with the Harmon Cove development in Secaucus. When completed, hikers will have access along the river and a pedestrian trail linking retail, office, commercial and residential districts. The trail will link Lincoln Park to the Hudson County Park and points north.
Liberty Walk, a section of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, stretches 1.3 miles across the waterfront of Liberty State Park. The pathway is popular with runners, walkers, bikers and those who simply prefer to sit and admire the view across the river.
Just minutes from bustling downtown Jersey City and the scenic Waterfront, the Liberty Park Natural Area of Liberty State Park is a hidden treasure. A self-guided nature trail meanders through salt marshes and wildflower meadows, where hikers may see great blue herons, snowy egrets and many beautiful plants and flowers.
The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway currently extends along nearly 15 miles in Hudson County, and encompasses state, county and municipal parks. Once complete, it will provide a contiguous 18.5 mile linear walkway system of parks, piers and open space along the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay waterfront, extending from the George Washington Bridge to the Bayonne Bridge. You can download the County of Hudson's draft implementation plan for the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway at their Web site.
