Leonard Gordon Park
Dr. Leonard J. Gordon Park (aka "Mosquito Park") is located on Kennedy Boulevard between Manhattan Avenue and Hutton Street in the Heights District. The park is best known for its oversized sculptures, Buffalo and Bears (created by sculptor Solon Hannibal Borglum, whose works often depict western themes and frontier life), which have delighted children since the early 1900s. Named for a local physician and Civil War veteran who helped to found the first public library in Jersey City, the park also includes a central gazebo, scenic walkways and World War I memorial. In designing the park, which opened in 1907, the landscape architect John T. Withers chose to incorporate much of the natural rocky terrain. As a result, the park today has a unique hilly landscape which makes it both visually interesting and great for an energizing hike.
