Bergen/Lafayette

Located just west of Liberty State Park, this community of brownstones, row houses and corner stores is experiencing a renaissance. With easy access to the office towers of the Historic Downtown, the Waterfront District and Manhattan via the Hudson-Bergen light rail line, the Bergen/Lafayette neighborhood is being transformed with new condominiums, restaurants and retail businesses. In addition to plans for large-scale residential and commercial developments near the Morris Canal, this district provides a variety of low-cost shopping and dining opportunities along the north-south thoroughfares of Kennedy Boulevard, Bergen Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive. Local families enjoy some of Jersey City's oldest planned green spaces, Arlington Park and Lafayette Park (newly renovated with new lights and playground equipment), as well as the largest public library in the Jersey City system, the Miller Branch.

With the support of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, which is responsible for managing real estate projects in the redevelopment zone, a creative public-private partnership between the Morris Canal Development Area Community Development Corporation and a private redevelopment firm is helping to turn brownfields sites into desirable addresses with a view of Liberty State Park and the NYC skyline. Similar projects throughout the district will result in the conversion of historic industrial complexes to market-rate and affordable housing.
